Next in this article, I will review how your diet and nutrition can impact the nerve system.

Foods and Drinks to avoid:

A. Processed foods

Stay away from foods that have artificial colours or flavours. Also if you are eating something with a list of chemicals you have never seen or can’t pronounce – proceed with caution. Also, fast food should be limited. Possibly once or twice a week. If every meal is from a restaurant this can lead to serious health issues and will affect your nerve system. Too much sugar is also hard on the nerve system as this can lead to more inflammation. Please eat real food from home as much as you can. Also, try to fresh food as much as possible.

B. Caffeine :

This is one chemical I really want you to avoid. Caffeine found in tea and coffee is a stimulant and will result in more stress on the nerve system. Result? More health challenges and slower results. I recommend having your favourite tea or coffee 2 to 3 times a week.
If you drink tea or coffee 2 to 3 times a day – slowly start to cut back. And if you really need that caffeine – please have it before 12 pm. Try switching to herbal teas that are caffeine-free.

C. Alcohol:

Of course, an occasional drink is not harmful (like for a special occasion) – but drinking alcohol daily in my opinion is hard on the nerve system. Alcohol is a depressant and causes a breakdown in the brain and nerve system. Obviously, this results in poor health over time and again can slow down results. Alcohol really seems to impact higher functioning in a negative way with areas involved in cognition and memory. Avoid or limit alcohol to once or twice a week. The less alcohol the better. Also, smoking puts a greater on the nerve system and should be avoided or limited as much as possible.

Foods and Drinks to Increase:

A. Real Fruits and Veggies – Yup. You guessed it. Veggies and fruits help the body heal and help your nerve system. I would focus more on greens and fruits from the berry family (blueberries are the best by far). Meats should be of high quality if this is part of your diet. Salmon and tuna are definitely meats to consider.

B. Water – approximately 80% of the brain is made of water depending on the research you read. If we can assume the spinal cord is an extension of the brain – then being hydrated will be beneficial. Drinking water helps the brain and nerve system fire at a better rate since the cells can communicate faster electrically. So staying hydrated helps the brain and spinal cord recover and function at the highest levels.

C. Nuts – as long as you are not allergic to nuts – please make sure this is part of your diet. Walnuts, almonds and cashews are some of the best. This really should be your snack throughout the day.
