Heat and Ice can be useful tools when the body feels discomfort. Although they are short-term measures – they can provide relief when the body has a flare-up or if there is chronic pain.
So always remember see what works best for you. I will provide guidelines but use your judgement to see what works best for you and your body.
Also remember the number one rule: regardless if you use heat or ice always have a barrier between the source of heat or ice and your skin. For example, you can use a towel, clothing or a pillowcase between the compress and your skin. Keep checking the skin to see if you are safe.
Also as a general rule think in increments of 5 minutes. 5 minutes is for moderate discomfort, 10 minutes is for medium discomfort and 15 minutes would be for strong discomfort. Generally speaking, more than 15 minutes is not required.
So which to use?
Ice packs are good for acute or strong pain. Patients will describe the pain as sharp and very painful. They might have a burning sensation. The ice “numbs” the area to provide temporary relief. Gel packs, cold water bottles or moist towels are recommended.
Heat is more for chronic stiffness pain and spasming. The objective is to bring blood to the area to relax muscle groups and decrease tension and stiffness. Also never heat the neck or back of the skull as this may disturb blood pressure or cause dizziness.Gel packs, hot water bottles, bean bags or moist towels are recommended. Electric heating pads are not recommended as prolonged use may cause harm.
Also if someone is diabetic or has sensory deprivation use extreme caution and have someone help and supervise if you decide to use a compress at all.
Hope these tips are helpful.
